Rory collected the last of the papers as the final bell of the day rang. Her students filed out, and she paper-clipped what she had gathered and set the stack on her desk. No papers would be graded tonight. Not with the homecoming parade happening in a few hours.

It was now mid-October, and Rory had settled into life at Sugar Springs High School. She and Pam Holland had become close friends, being across the hall from one another and sharing the same conference period. She’d also become friendly with Sarah Meinholdt, the drama teacher who’d starred in Tanner Haddock’s directorial debut, which was supposed to be released shortly before Christmas in a limited run. Other friends included the ironically named Frieda Painter, the art teacher close to Rory’s age, and Linda McGregor, head of the English department, in her mid-thirties and divorced with no kids. The five women ate lunch together every day and even did the occasional happy hour on a Friday.

She was enjoying her classes immensely. While she had taught U.S. history previously, she welcomed the addition of World History, made all the easier thanks to Paige’s notebooks full of terrific ideas and stellar lesson plans.

Rory glanced down at her T-shirt, proudly bearing the logo of the Sugar Springs Knights. It was her usual Friday attire, but this week had been special because it was homecoming. She and Pam were co-sponsors of the National Honor Society, which would have a float in tonight’s parade, which started at the high school at six-thirty, traveled a mile and a half and circled the town square, and then returned to the high school stadium, which sat adjacent to the high school itself.

Freddie Otts, whom Paige had told her would probably wind up being a movie mogul before he was thirty years old, was the NHS president. Rory and Pam were able to sit back and merely monitor activities because Freddie and his cadre of officers had everything well in hand. She would go down in a few minutes to where the NHS members would be putting the last touches on the club’s float in the student parking lot.

Rory had never been happier in her life, not even when she was winning gold medals and ranked the number one figure skater in the world. Her life revolved around her students.

And Walker.

They hadn’t slept together yet. Rory had said she wanted to be friends first and take things slowly. Walker had taken her at her word. They had spent quite a bit of time together, even with both of them settling into their new jobs. Walker’s parents had left on their world tour, and he had familiarized himself with his dad’s cases, picking up new clients of his own. They didn’t see each other every day, but the rare days they didn’t, they talked and texted. A lot. They had gone into Tyler several times on the weekends for dates, taking in movies and dinners, and once attending a concert at her former university.
